Danville announces program to support small businesses impacted by Streetscape Construction

On November 28, Danville’s city commission approved a resolution to provide relief funds to those local privately-owned small businesses located in the Downtown Streetscape Project area.
The Streetscape Project, which began in early 2022, is necessary to improve pedestrian safety and to promote the City’s vibrant downtown area. The project has an expected completion date of June 2023.

During construction, the downtown businesses have remained open and inviting to the Citizens of Danville and our guests but the impact of the construction on their business, particularly those which rely on steady foot-traffic, has been great.

For this reason, The City of Danville will move forward with a relief program which will support these businesses. Businesses may apply for up to than $10,000 of relief through an application process which closes on January 31. The City of Danville has received American Rescue Plan Act funds which will be used to fund general services and City projects, allowing flexibility for relief payments at no additional cost to the community.

“During the pandemic, the City was very conservative in its spending and approach to budgeting.  This, in conjunction with the Federal funds provided from the American Recovery Program Act (ARPA), allows the City to establish this short term grant program to offset demonstrable business losses in the area of the streetscape construction.  The businesses are dependent on access which has been significantly impacted by this project, and as with other cities, we consider this program a project-related expense. This project is different than previous smaller sections of streetscape improvements in that it impacts the entire downtown.  The overall community will benefit by this investment in downtown.” says City Manager, Earl Coffey.
